Home Safety Tips Before You Travel

Whether you’re heading out for a quick weekend getaway or embarking on a long road trip, leaving your home empty comes with certain risks. Here are 5 home safety tips to take before you travel:

Lock and secure all entry points

Double-check that every door and window is locked. If your locks are outdated, consider upgrading to deadbolts or reinforced strike plates for stronger security. Skip the old habit of hiding a spare key under the doormat or flowerpot. Instead, leave one with a trusted neighbour, friend, or family member who can help in case of an emergency.

Make your home look lived-in

A dark, quiet house with mail piling up is a clear sign no one’s home. Use timers to switch lights on and off at different times to mimic your daily routine. In winter, arrange for snow removal and ask someone to leave tire tracks or footprints in your driveway.

Arrange regular check-ins

Having someone stop by every few days is one of the best ways to protect your home. A neighbour or friend can collect your mail, water plants, and spot issues like leaks or storm damage before they get worse.

Safeguard valuables and prevent damage

Keep valuables like jewelry, cash, passports, and sentimental items locked in a home safe or stored off-site. Close curtains or blinds to reduce visibility from outside. If you’ll be gone more than a few days, unplug small appliances and electronics to prevent power surges and reduce fire risk.

Use smart security technology

Security cameras, video doorbells, and alarm systems add an extra layer of protection. Many modern systems allow remote monitoring, real-time alerts, and even two-way communication with visitors.
