Tips for Taking Your Pets to the Cottage

Spending time at the cottage is a cherished summer tradition for many Canadians, and it can be just as special for your pet. Here are six tips to help ensure your pet has a safe, happy, and stress-free cottage getaway.

Make a Travel Kit
Some cabin and cottage destinations are hours away from home, which means long travel times for your pet. With the right preparation, a chaotic trip can turn into a peaceful and enjoyable journey. Packing your pet’s essentials in a travel kit is key to keeping them comfortable throughout the trip. Be sure to include food, water, treats, toys, and medications.

Pet-Proof Your Cottage
Secure areas near the water with temporary barriers, store fishing gear and tools safely, and check for toxic plants around the property. If the space isn’t fenced and your pet isn’t off-leash trained, consider using portable pet fencing.

Beat the Heat
Create shaded rest areas with cooling mats or misting stations, and consider making frozen treats with pet-safe ingredients. Plan outdoor activities for early mornings or evenings when temperatures are cooler, and stick to shady trails or paths near streams whenever possible. Always provide fresh, cool water.

Dive into Water Safety
Always supervise your pet during water activities, especially in moving water. Currents can be dangerous and unpredictable. After swimming, rinse your pet to remove algae and other residue. Stay informed about local blue-green algae warnings, though they’re not always posted.

Protect Against Cottage Pests
Cottage areas are often home to ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests. Keep your pet on marked trails and up to date on flea and tick preventatives. Choose insect repellents that are safe for pets, as products like citronella can be harmful.
