When you are looking to make a move, you often think about the needs of you and your family first. But don’t forget the needs of your pets! Making sure they are well accommodated will benefit everyone in the long run. Here are 3 pet friendly features to look for in your next home:
A Fenced-in Yard
The yard is a pet's playground. It's important to ensure that they can play and run around without getting themselves into danger. A fenced-in yard is definitely a plus for any homeowner with an outdoor-friendly animal. Make sure the fence is an adequate height and that there are no gaps where your pet can fit through. You'll also want to check if the outdoor space will fit your pet's needs. For instance, a large dog may need a more expansive are than a cat.
This one applies mainly to dogs, as giving them a bath can be a tricky exercise. Having a pet washing station equipped with an accessible showerhead will make it much easier to keep active dogs spick and span. Even better if this washing station is located near an entrance to the house, such as a in the mudroom, or even outside for convenient rinsing. A spacious bathroom with a large bath and detachable showerhead can also be a great spot for bath time.
Make sure the flooring is equipped to handle the wear and tear caused by your pets. Scratches, spills, mud, and accidents will be the main things you'll want to consider. Carpeting is prone to stains and damage, whereas materials like ceramic, porcelain, and bamboo are easy to clean. Laminate flooring is also a great option; however, make sure you that you purchase laminate that is marketed as waterproof.
Bonus: Dedicated Pet Room
As much as pets are social beings, they all like to have a little privacy now and again. If you don’t have a room to dedicate to your pet, try creating a little spot for them in a nook or closet. Making a space just for your pets will put them at ease in their new environment and will make them less anxious about the move.
